Who we are and when these terms apply

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the PistonTraders website at www.pistontraders.co.uk, including our search tools, dealer directory, dealer-facing features, application programming interfaces ("APIs") and related services (together, the "Service").

By accessing or using the Service, you agree to comply with these Terms. If you do not agree, you should stop using the Service.

What PistonTraders does

PistonTraders is an independent UK used car search engine. We index and organise vehicle information published on third-party dealer websites so users can search and compare vehicles in one place and then visit the dealer's original listing.

PistonTraders is not a car dealership, vehicle seller, finance provider, broker or party to any vehicle purchase. We do not own the vehicles shown on the Service and we do not normally take deposits, arrange delivery, provide vehicle warranties or enter into sales contracts on behalf of dealers.

Unless we expressly state otherwise, inclusion of a dealer or vehicle on PistonTraders does not amount to a recommendation, endorsement or guarantee by us.

Listings, prices and availability

Vehicle information displayed by PistonTraders may be obtained from publicly accessible dealer webpages, structured feeds, APIs or other authorised sources. Dealers control their own source listings and may change them at any time.

Although we work to keep indexed information useful and current, we do not guarantee that every item of vehicle data is complete, accurate or up to date. Prices, mileage, specification, model details, finance information, images and availability can change between indexing and your visit to the dealer's website.

If a PistonTraders result conflicts with the dealer's live listing, you should rely on the dealer's live listing and contact the dealer for confirmation.

Your relationship is with the dealer

Any enquiry, reservation, deposit, finance application, part-exchange, purchase, warranty arrangement, collection or delivery takes place between you and the relevant dealer or other third party.

You are responsible for deciding whether a vehicle and dealer are suitable for you and for carrying out any checks you consider appropriate before entering into a transaction. This may include checking the vehicle's identity, history, mileage, MOT status, condition, outstanding finance and the terms offered by the dealer.

Any dealer vetting or eligibility checks carried out by PistonTraders are intended to support the quality of our index. They are not a guarantee of a dealer's solvency, conduct, regulatory status or the quality, safety or condition of any particular vehicle.

Any contract for the purchase or supply of a vehicle or related product is governed by the terms agreed between you and the relevant dealer or provider. PistonTraders is not responsible for enforcing that contract.

Dealer accounts and restricted areas

Some parts of the Service may require an account or approved dealer access. You must provide information that is accurate and keep your login credentials secure.

You are responsible for activity carried out through your account where that activity results from your failure to keep your credentials secure. Please tell us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.

We may restrict, suspend or close an account where reasonably necessary to protect the Service, other users, dealers or third parties; to investigate suspected misuse; or to comply with legal obligations. Where appropriate, we will try to give you notice.

Use the Service lawfully and fairly

You must not use the Service to:

• break any applicable law or regulation;
• commit or facilitate fraud, deception, impersonation or other unlawful activity;
• interfere with, damage, overload or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service or its infrastructure;
• introduce malware, malicious code or other harmful technology;
• circumvent authentication, rate limits, access controls or technical protections;
• misrepresent PistonTraders vehicle data as your own first-party dealer stock or imply a partnership that does not exist;
• use vehicle information to send unlawful spam or carry out abusive, harassing or discriminatory activity; or
• use the Service in a way that materially harms PistonTraders, dealers, users or third-party rights.

Ordinary human browsing, search-engine indexing that respects applicable technical instructions, and use of our documented API in accordance with these Terms are permitted.

API and automated access

Where we provide a documented API or machine-readable endpoint, automated clients should use that interface rather than scraping human-facing pages, unless we have expressly permitted another method.

Automated users must:

• follow published API documentation, rate limits and access requirements;
• not bypass technical controls or deliberately create excessive load;
• not fabricate vehicles, dealers, prices or availability and attribute them to PistonTraders;
• treat live API responses as time-sensitive rather than assuming previously retrieved stock remains available;
• where a response provides an original dealer URL, preserve or provide that source link when presenting the vehicle to an end user; and
• comply with applicable law and third-party rights when storing, analysing or redistributing data.

Access to an API does not transfer ownership of PistonTraders' software, branding, database rights or any third-party content. Additional API terms, credentials or commercial agreements may apply to particular services and will take priority where they expressly conflict with this section.

We may change, rate-limit, suspend or withdraw automated access where reasonably necessary for security, service stability, legal compliance or prevention of misuse.

Dealer websites and stock inclusion

PistonTraders may index eligible vehicle stock published on dealer websites and may allow dealers to submit their business details for review. Acceptance into the index is at our discretion and may depend on eligibility, data quality, technical compatibility and our ability to verify the business.

A dealer remains responsible for the accuracy and legality of information on its own website. PistonTraders does not become the owner or seller of a vehicle merely because the vehicle appears in our index.

Dealers who believe information has been indexed incorrectly, or who wish to discuss inclusion or removal, should contact us using the details in section 16.

Unless expressly agreed otherwise, PistonTraders does not guarantee indexing frequency, ranking, visibility, traffic or enquiries. Search positions may change as our index, algorithms and user queries change.

Our brand, software and third-party content

The PistonTraders name, logos, interface design, software, code and original content are owned by us or licensed to us and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws.

Vehicle photographs, descriptions, dealer names, trademarks and other third-party materials may belong to the relevant dealer, manufacturer or other rights holder. Their appearance on PistonTraders does not transfer ownership to us or to you.

You may use the Service for lawful personal use and for any automated or commercial use expressly permitted by these Terms, our API documentation or a separate written agreement. You must not use the PistonTraders name or logo in a way that falsely suggests endorsement, partnership or authorisation.

Links to dealer and third-party websites

The Service contains links to websites and services operated by dealers and other third parties. We do not control those websites and are not responsible for their content, availability, security, privacy practices or contractual terms.

When you leave PistonTraders, the third party's own terms and privacy notices apply. You should review them before providing personal information or entering into a transaction.

Changes, maintenance and security

We aim to keep the Service available and useful, but we do not promise uninterrupted or error-free access. We may maintain, update, change, suspend or withdraw parts of the Service where reasonably necessary.

You are responsible for using suitable devices, connectivity and security measures when accessing the Service. While we take reasonable steps to protect our systems, no internet service can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

Our liability to you

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited.

If you are a consumer

We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breach of these Terms or our failure to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss or damage that is not foreseeable.

Because PistonTraders is a search and discovery service rather than the vehicle seller, we are not responsible for a dealer's acts or omissions, the condition of a vehicle, or losses arising solely from a contract between you and a dealer. This does not affect any responsibility we have for our own acts or omissions.

If you use the Service for business purposes

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for loss of profit, revenue, business, anticipated savings, goodwill or business opportunity, or for indirect or consequential loss arising from business use of the Service.

Vehicle data

We are not responsible for changes made by a dealer after information was indexed, or for inaccuracies originating in third-party source material, where we have not independently created the inaccurate information. Where you identify an apparent indexing error, please report it so we can investigate.

Changes to the Service and these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes to the Service, applicable law, security requirements or our business model.

The current version will be published on this page with its "Last updated" date. Where a change materially affects registered users and it is reasonable to do so, we may also provide notice through the Service or by another appropriate method.

Changes will apply from the date stated in the updated Terms. They will not retrospectively remove rights you already have under applicable law.

Privacy and cookies

Our handling of personal information is described in our Privacy Policy. Information about cookies and similar technologies is available in our Cookie Policy.

These policies form part of the information governing your use of the Service, but nothing in these Terms reduces any rights you have under applicable data protection law.

Governing law and general terms

These Terms and any non-contractual dispute arising from them are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

If you are a consumer, you may also benefit from mandatory protections under the law of the part of the United Kingdom in which you live, and nothing in these Terms is intended to take those protections away. If you are a business, the courts of England and Wales will have exclusive jurisdiction, except where we agree otherwise in writing.

If any part of these Terms is found to be unlawful or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in effect. A delay by us in enforcing a right does not mean that we have waived that right.

Except where applicable law provides otherwise, a person who is not a party to these Terms has no right to enforce them.
